Tom Morin, LPN

February' '09 Employee of the Month

Tom has been at Northampton Area Pediatrics for 15 years.  He was born and raised in Northampton, and now lives in South Hadley with Marie, his wife of 20 years.  Everyone at Northampton Area Pediatrics enjoys his good humor, vibrant shirts, and talent for the job.

An interview with Tom...

How did you end up in pediatrics?

My last clinical rotation during nursing school was in pediatrics, and I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do.  I started here [at NAP] right after school and it was a perfect fit.

What is your role at NAP?

I am one of the nurses, so this means that I do a little bit of everything.  One of my main duties besides nursing is ordering the medical supplies for the office, which keeps me very busy.  I perform nursing treatments, I scribe, and provide telephone advice.  I like scribing best. It is the most interesting and most fun.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

Children are great and a lot of fun.  I love the doctors and staff.  It is fun to watch the whole process and learn so much from our wonderfully gifted doctors.  I also enjoy the variety.  We do so many different things during the day.  Yesterday for example, I was on the phones for 1.5 hours, in the lab the late afternoon, and also scribing and performing treatments.

What are your interests outside of NAP?

I bowl in a league once a week with my wife.  Fitness is a priority for me and I work out at home every day [see the Health and Fitness section of our website for more about Tom’s exercise routine].  I am a big Boston sports fan.  And I love history.  In addition to reading and studying history, I play historical board games.  I had my own game published called Valor of the Guards.  It is a WWII board game that takes place on the Russian Front.  I know Curt Schilling – the ex-Red Sox pitcher – since he is the president of the game company that published my game.  I participate in gaming tournaments, and in fact I was the champion in 1996.  When I was more involved in the competitive aspect of gaming in the 1990’s, I was ranked fourth in the world ratings.  I still compete, but now I am more involved and interested in game design.
