Many people have heard about a recent major outbreak of measles occurring mostly in the southwest United States and traced to Disneyland. A vast majority of those people infected had not received the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine. This out break is a good reminder that the best way to prevent this potentially fatal disease (about 1 to 3 per 1000 cases) is to receive the vaccination. If your child is old enough to get vaccinated and you had declined the vaccine but would like him or her vaccinated, please call our office to schedule that immunization.
So far this year, the number of influenza cases throughout the country is similar to an average influenza season. There have been 15 pediatric deaths and the season is just beginning. There are four components to the influenza vaccine and 3 out of the 4 components are effective against this years' strains. If you have not had your child vaccinated it is not too late. Please call our office at 413-584-8700 to set up an appointment time for your child to get vaccinated.
