How young can a baby start teething?

My boy is 12 weeks old and has been a bit fussy lately. I’ve been trying to figure out if he is teething early. He chomps on his binky rather than sucking and has been drooling a bunch. He has also been a fussy eater. Could he be teething? How long will it last?

Yes, he not only could be teething, but it sounds like he is. The first teeth can erupt any time between one and 12 months of age. Some babies are even a bit later in getting their teeth.  The average age, however, for onset of teething is about 4 months. Teeth continue to erupt throughout the first two years and then there is a break until about age six. Most babies do not have continual teething symptoms but rather have periods of drooling and chewing interspersed with periods of relative comfort as the various teeth come in. Providing things to chew on--a cloth wrung out in water and put in the freezer works well--and an absorbent bib will help you and your babe through teething.
