Are you a pre-teen going through puberty? You are not alone...

I am a nine year old girl turning 10 pretty soon. I am starting to have breast development. (I already know it’s puberty). My Mom got me a training bra and I’m kind of embarrassed that my classmates will find out and laugh at me, especially the boys. What should I do?

The changes that happen to your body during puberty, even when you know about them, can be pretty hard to deal with, especially if you are one of the first in your class to start changing.  One good thing is that at your age, you can be sure that your girl classmates will soon be developing breasts as well so you won’t be alone.

Many girls wear a cami, (sleeveless top with a little shelf bra) under a layer or two of shirts in the winter, and this keeps them comfortable without showing as a bra.  Although you feel everyone is looking at you, most boys are not really thinking about puberty at your age and are not likely to notice the gradual changes in their classmates’ bodies.

Try to be the same person you were before puberty began and they will treat you the same.  Keep active, shower every morning, use deodorant if you need it and try to take this new body in stride.  A year from now, all your girlfriends will be in some stage of puberty and you can be proud and healthy together.  If you don’t have a good book, The Care and Keeping of You by the American Girl Library has lots of good information about the changes you can expect and what to do to make puberty a breeze.
