Concussions in Sports: Help for Parents
Thursday, May 15th, 6:00pm to 7:00pm
Hadley Farms Meeting House, Route 9, Hadley
A Cooley Dickinson/Massachusetts General Hospital lecture
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) from participation in sports and recreation activities have received increased public awareness, with many states and the federal government considering or implementing laws directing the response to suspected brain injury. While public health programs promote the benefits of sports and recreation activities, those benefits are tempered by the risk for injury, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). During 2001-2005, the CDC estimated 207,830 Emergency Department visits for concussions and other TBIs related to sports and recreation activities were reported annually, with 65 percent of TBIs occurring among children ages 5-18 years old.
This presentation is designed to help parents understand what they need to know about concussions and how parents can best support their children as they participate in sports.
The community lecture is free and open to all. To register online, visit www.cooley-dickinson.org/classes or call 888-554-4CDH (4234). Seating is limited and registration is required.
