Annual School Physicals

Don’t look now, but the beginning of school is just around the corner! If you haven’t already done so, now is a great time to make sure you get in for your child’s annual physical. Why do we ask you to bring your child in each year for a check-up? Here are a few reasons:

A chance to talk about things we don’t usually cover

-During a short, focused sick visit, we don’t usually have the time to talk about preventive care. These are the things like good nutrition, regular exercise, and sleep, which keep us all healthy and keep us out of the doctor’s office! We can talk about what to expect over the next year, particularly during times of rapid change, like puberty. It is a good time to reflect on the past year, bring up questions about health that you may have forgotten to ask, or discuss healthy goals and plans you have for the year ahead.

A chance to get to know your provider

-Coming in for a regular visit allows us to get to know you and your family, so that we can provide care that is appropriate for you. When you come in for a (hopefully rare) sick visit, you can be assured that you will be seen by someone who knows you and will listen to your concerns.

A chance to screen

-The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a number of screening tests for kids which can make a big difference in children’s health. As you may know, at every well checkup we will measure and weigh your child, ask questions about development, and check blood pressure, hearing and vision, We also do recommended cholesterol and anemia screening and can also screen our older adolescent patients for issues such as depression, STDs, substance use, and readiness for sports participation.

A chance to protect

-At many visits, we will recommend vaccination to protect against disease. An annual visit allows us to check and make sure that your child is up to date on all of his or her vaccinations, and that there have been no new recommendations. Here is a link to an updated recommended vaccine schedule

-We know that it can be difficult to find time to come in for your regular physical, or to squeeze in that last minute sports physical so that your teen can be cleared to play. Call our office so that we can find a time to get you in for an exam. Over the summer, we have made availability for Saturday morning physicals and due to cancellations we can often fit you in sooner than you think.

Most importantly, annual check-ups are a way for us to help prevent illness and injuries before they happen. Call us! 413-584-8700

Some insurance companies require that you wait 365 days between annual physicals, others permit one physical per calendar year. We can help if you have questions.
